UKLA President’s Report

In my previous president’s report I referred to recent press announcements from Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover about their move to vehicle electrification in the forth coming years and I thought that’s completely understandable with the CO2

targets of 95g per kilometre looming towards us.

I have just been viewing the video released by Tesla for the “Semi” truck prototype and I have to say that I was always under the impression that the energy density required for commercial vehicle operation was still years away and that diesel engines were still firmly here for the foreseeable future, but what an eye opener. Five hundred miles range and a tractor unit acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in five seconds and a forty tonne loaded weight of twenty seconds is frankly incredible. They also mention reliability of a million miles before maintenance and brakes that should not wear out!

A colleague of mine has a phrase that goes along the lines of...”there will be more change in the next five

UEIL President’s Report

I would like to begin by wishing all the readers of Lube magazine all the best for 2018. The previous 12 months were very intensive but also very successful for UEIL. Our yearly Congress in Bologna in October was a particular highlight of 2017. The programme focused on innovation and sustainability and attracted over 200 delegates. During the Congress we heard about the many examples of how the industry is innovating, touching on issues such as digitalisation and product development. It also became clear that sustainability will be a major aspect for our members to consider in the future.

Another milestone of 2017 has been the launch of the new upgraded Industry Statistics now issued by UEIL. A tremendous work has been done by the Statistics Committee to issue both 2015 and 2016 data and to improve the data quality and the feedback we have received so far has been very positive.

Within the Association we have also undergone some transformations, with a new Secretariat in place, and a revised and vibrant webpage.

Looking ahead to next year, our Congress will take 4 LUBE MAGAZINE NO.143 FEBRUARY 2018

Again as I mentioned before there is a long tail of existing vehicles out there with internal combustion engines, but if the figures for the electric truck are accurate, then who wouldn’t swap to this technology as soon as feasibly possible to reduce operating cost and be more competitive and profitable.

This obviously concludes with the thought as a lubricant blender, of what will the shape of our lubricants portfolio will look like in forthcoming years? I had intended to look at some industrial topics this time, but seeing the press release I really did have to put pen to paper. Maybe next time.

place in Budapest in October, and we are aiming to make it even bigger and better than before. We are developing a programme that will offer as usual great networking opportunities as well as inspiring presentations. We will introduce a high degree of interactivity, to give the

opportunity to delegates to discuss with leading industry experts about how our industry is developing and preparing for future challenges. Our vision is to make our Congress the main gathering of the year for the European lubricants industry.

We are also planning to increase our presence on social media – a UEIL twitter page and LinkedIn page could be in the offering – and we are going to intensify our work to create fair competition in the lubricants market. This is merely the tip of the iceberg in terms of our plans for 2018, and we would be delighted to hear from our members on what they believe UEIL should do or change – if you would like to become more engaged in the Association, you are most welcome to contact me or the Secretariat.
