material, aluminium or CFKs which are durable and hard-wearing will be needed. We will also have to deal with new ways of optimising the moving parts of machinery using tighter tolerances and also higher requirements for surface quality.


We have to keep in our minds that the number of parts for an ‘e’ car are much lower than the number of parts required in a conventional combustion engine vehicle. There are around 1,400 parts in a conventional car and around 200 parts in an ‘e’ car. The number of parts that have to be machined or operated by lubricants are going to be very much reduced and this is going to have an impact on the volumes of our industrial lubricants as well.


As well as challenges and threats in our markets there are also new opportunities. We need to look at this new era of mobility through this lens rather than the lens of threat. Only through this way can we find a way to replace things which otherwise are going to be removed from the sector. Fuchs is tackling this challenge by working on projects with different industrial partners.


One such project is called ODIN, Optimised Drivetrain In Operation, where we are trying to generate a


so-called ‘e’ engine oil. In this case trying to lubricate and to cool all of the aggregates in an ‘e’; engine driven car with one single lubricant. There are going to be parts that need lubrication such as roller bearings in the ‘e’ engine and gearbox. There are also parts that will need to be cooled such as power and electronics in the engine and roller bearings as well as the gearbox. Trying to generate one single lubricant for the entire vehicle will also be very beneficial for the application.


Nowadays the lubricants industry is exposed to changes in technology. Some of these changes might have a disruptive character like 3D printing which is beyond our immediate control and there is not much we can do about this. Others might just be evolutionary like digitisation and mobility. The lubricants industry will experience impact and changes but there are strategies we can adopt to deal with these challenges and with these changes to try to make out of these threats a possible challenge that we can manage in a successful way.
