Fewer moving parts in battery-powered vehicles are just one part of the picture. How can the industry adapt to this changing environment?
Alongside this, there will be eager listeners for a view from Volvo Technology Corporation, when Lubricants Co-ordinator Bengt Otterholm gives a rundown on an OEM’s expectations for the future of traditional passenger car technology. Otterholm, also on the Fuels and Lubricants Working Group for ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association), will touch on current and future lubricant specifications to meet emissions and fuel economy commitments.
Ever-evolving needs of engine testing are also up for discussion with speakers from ExxonMobil Research
and Engineering and Lubrizol. This theme is continued in an inter-active panel discussion on this topic involving key industry stakeholders.
It’s clear the base oils and lubricants world is becoming ever more complicated. Gone are the days of engine makers tailoring their engines to oil; the onus is now on oil blenders and additive makers to craft their products for different engines.
Complexity and change are set to be the buzzwords of 2018 and the latest edition of The World Base Oils & Lubricants Conference will shed more light on a clouded, shape-shifting landscape.

13th Pan-American Base Oils & Lubricants Conference
Late November is a time when festivities are ramped up in the Unites States: post-Thanksgiving and ahead of the holiday season. It is also this time every year when the base oils and lubricants industry from across the region get together for the annual ICIS Pan-American Base Oils and Lubricants Conference. This year’s 13th edition had a great turnout bringing over 300 senior industry professionals to Jersey City to meet and do business on the banks of the Hudson.
This year’s theme looked to address “key challenges, opportunities and demands, and their impact on the base oils and lubricants industry across the Americas” and was supported by viewpoints from the USA, Brazil and Mexico, as well as further afield. With participation from the American Petroleum Institute, Chevron Oronite, Lubrizol Mexico, Petronas Lubricants International and many more, it was indeed a stellar speaker line-up.
The opening speech came from Mark Kuhn, a Vice President at Ricardo Strategic Consulting on the future of electrified vehicles and he assessed how it would influence the vehicles we drive. Many other presentations throughout the conference then looked further into market influences including a vibrant and interactive panel on Group III market dynamics which included input from BAPCO, SGH Consulting LLC, The Lubrizol Corporation, Valvoline and Vertex Energy. With wide reaching factors on the programme, from technological improvements to government regulations, it provided critical information for small and large organisations alike.

Other highlights included the breaking news announcement from Motiva. During the presentation from Bryan Schorzman, their General Manager, he announced that they have launched into the Group III space with two new grades for the lubricants market produced from their base oil refinery in Port Arthur, Texas. Another highlight was the additional agenda focus on Latin American markets’ recent and coming changes in the automotive sector, from emissions regulations to the arrival of electronic vehicles.
Alongside a day and a half of expert presentations, the exhibition provided an excellent platform to network across the international value chain with attendees coming from 25 countries to participate in hundreds of business meetings throughout the event. Attendees say that being able to engage with not only key clients but potential future customers makes this conference a must-attend every year. Key regional and global organisations were also present within the exhibition including BAPCO, ExxonMobil, Neste and many others.
This meeting forms part of the ICIS global base oils conference portfolio, with six events spanning the globe each year. If you missed the opportunity attend the Pan-American edition this time around, why not join one of the others in towards the beginning of 2018: World (London, February), India (Mumbai, April), or Asia (Singapore, June).
