The new 200-page publication “Lubricant and Mineral Oil ABC” contains around 830 terms and is an ideal reference book for those involved in the lubricant and mineral oil sectors.
In addition to a comprehensive content update for the associated product groups of fuels, lubricants and heating fuels, numerous other technical terms have been added, for example covering food grade lubricants. Due to the increased importance of HSE legislation additional definitions for areas of chemicals legislation (REACH, CLP, GHS), environmental law, occupational health and safety and dangerous goods legislation are included.
Numerous references to corresponding DIN / EN / ISO standards as well as references to other terms make it easier to find further information on a topic. Furthermore, the book includes a comprehensive list of abbreviations relevant to the industry and a new overview table with relevant test methods for the lubricant and mineral oil sector that contains the corresponding ISO standards as well as cross-references to different national standards.

Food Grade Lubricants Food grade lubricants are used for the lubrication of machines and their components, for the transmission of power and for corrosion and wear protection during the production of food, food packaging (with direct product contact), pharmaceutical products, cosmetics, tobacco products and animal feed. Quality, hygiene and product liability are very important in the food industry in particular and the contamination of products with lubricants must be avoided. In all cases in which contact between a product and lubricant cannot be completely excluded, approved food grade lubricants are to be used that are harmless both physiologically and according to food law.

In the absence of specific European and German legislation governing the quality of food grade lubricants and release agents, the US standard of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and USDA (US Department of Agriculture), which is internationally recognised, is used for these products in practice.
The evaluation of food grade lubricants to ensure compliance with the US standard and the corresponding registration is generally carried out by the USA-based NSF International (NSF = National Sanitation Foundation). Products that are approved by the NSF as lubricants and release agents for the food industry are assigned to specific product codes depending on their use: H1, H2, H3 and 3H. Registrations for food grade lubricants according to the US standard can also be carried out by the private company InS Services in the UK.
Besides the registration of H1 lubricants, which make up the greatest share of the range of food grade lubricants, the ISO 21469 standard has been introduced for their production and use, according to which the production of lubricants can be certified.
NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) The NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) is a US-based independent non-government organisation which carries out the evaluation and registration of substances and products for the food industry in accordance with the US standard of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and USDA (US Department of Agriculture). It took over these tasks in 1999 from the USDA. Registration by NSF International is also recognised and used in the EU and internationally.
NSF H1, H2, H3, 3H Products (Food Industry) Products that are approved by the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) as lubricants and release agents for the food industry are assigned to certain product codes depending on their use: H1, H2, H3 and 3H. For the registration of lubricants and release agents, the requirements according to the NSF Registration Guidelines and the US Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) of the FDA apply.
