ACI’s 2017 European Base Oils and Lubricants Interactive Summit

Nicky Thomas, Lube Editor

Last year’s European lubrication conference season drew to a close at the end of November, the last but certainly not least, being ACI’s 2017 European Base Oils and Lubricants Interactive Summit which was held in Antwerp. This annual conference was injected with new energy under the leadership of the Senior Conference Producer Sarah Ajawin. It got underway on the afternoon of the 28th November with a tour of Q8 Oils Blending Plant followed by a presentation and a question and answer session.

Thomas Norrby, Senior Technical Lubricants Advisor from Nynas chaired the conference, and the first presentation was given by our very own President, Valentina Serra-Holm who delivered an overview of the European Lubricant Market.

This conference was well rounded with parallel sessions running, giving participants a choice of lectures to attend. The presentations were on a variety of subjects and enlightened even the most

experienced lubricant professional. For example, the presentation made by John Leavens, Director of Oil Markets Midstream and Downstream at IHS Energy opened everybody’s eyes as most were not aware of the implications of the impact of IMO Marpol Annex VI regulations on base oil pricing.

Presentations were delivered on a variety of subjects and key fundamental market views were given from different geographical regions. Round table events were held where small groups could debate a subject - it was interesting to see where these lead as nothing was scripted here. On-stage interviews were also held meaning industry professionals had the opportunity to answer questions about their businesses from different perspectives. The new networking concepts proved to be very successful, ensuring new contacts were made and ideas shared - there was even a game of carpet croquet during the refreshment break which offered an alternative way in which to meet with other participants!
