Update
This month sees the Automechanika exhibition take place at the NEC in Birmingham on 6th to 8th June. I am pleased to report that Verification of Lubricant Specifications will be in attendance promoting its services to the wider trade sector.
Last year the exhibition attracted 9,000 visitors to 800 companies both established and new entrants to the automotive sector, catering for both the aftermarket and supply chain industries. Reports from the 2016 exhibition raised some concerns over how new entrants were marketing their finished lubricant products in relation to the ACEA 2012 engine oil sequences.
Since then ATIEL, the European Technical Association has published its own guidance on incompatible and unlikely claims. ACEA, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, has also produced new ACEA 2016 engine oil sequences which I referred to in my report in the January edition of Lube magazine.
Taken together these changes both clarify and at the same time add complexity to the automotive market. From 1st December 2017 any new claims on finished lubricants are to be made by marketers only against the ACEA 2016 engine oil sequences.
Although I will be taking a keen interest in the way in which lubricant marketers will be making claims against the ACEA engine oil sequences at the Automechanika event, I am proud to report that VLS will also be playing its part in supporting greater market compliance by holding our first seminar on the ACEA 2016 engine oil sequences.
Due to be held in London at the start of July, Ford the leading global automotive manufacturer has agreed to present their view of ACEA 2016 from the OEM’s perspective, setting out what the new sequences are designed to achieve for vehicle and more importantly engine production. BPCastrol will respond on behalf of lubricant marketers and manufacturers, setting out the changes necessary in product formulation, chemistry and performance to meet these new demanding requirements.
More information on the event can be found at the VLS website at
www.ukla-vls.org.uk. I look forward to meeting our members and representatives of the sector at the event. I am also grateful to Arne Richters, ACEA’s Public Affairs & Stakeholder Relations Director for his support in bringing this event together.
This year should see the automotive sector continue to rebuild confidence in its products following the exhaust emissions issues of last year, the United Kingdom who has already announced its intention to leave the European Union will be negotiating terms of its exit in earnest, and the rise of global protectionism following the United States ‘America First’ policy risks undermining free trade initiatives over recent years to create more open markets and outwardly-facing countries. It should be an interesting summer.
