The climax of any ELGI AGM is their Gala Dinner with entertainment, and this ‘Northern Lights Gala Dinner’ was spectacular! With a dress code of ‘dress to impress’ the atmosphere was electric! Finland is one of the best places on Earth to spot the Northern Lights – they appear on more than 200 nights a year in Finnish Lapland. Also organised was a visit by the husky dogs which pulled the winning sled in the recent Olympic Games.

Helen, Paul and Glen are all involved in the European REACH Grease Thickener Consortium, responsible for registering chemicals used as grease thickeners under the REACH regulation.

They led this well-attended forum, with many questions being raised. Also we found out that approximately 60,000 registrations are expected and the last registration deadline for existing chemicals will be on 31 May 2018. After the break, Alexandra Nevskaya of Dow Corning presented ‘New Phenyl/Fluoro Siloxane Copolymer Fluid Properties and their use for Innovative Greases’ (co-authored by Manfred Jungk and Christian Kranenberg). Joe Kaperick from Afton Chemical, Chair of the Grease Particle Evaluation WG, spoke about ‘The Complex Issue of Dropping point Enhancement in Grease’.

Tuesday 9th May: in the morning Pawel Figiel, ECHA introduced the ‘REACH 2018 Roadmap’. ELGI Initiative No. 2: a REACH Panel Discussion was held. Four panel members: Dr Pawel Figiel (The European Chemicals Agency) Dr Helen Kean (Anthesis) Paul Whitehead (wca consulting) Glen Carty (Shell)

The final two presentations were by Gareth Fish of Lubrizol who presented ‘Additive Technology to Improve the Grease Making Process’ and George Diloyan of NIS Nanotech Industrial Solutions, Inc. (co-authored by Elena McDaniel) who delivered ‘Comparative study of MoS2, IFWS2 and PTFE solids in LiX greases’.

The Best Paper Award went to: Johan Leckner of Axel Christiernsson International AB. His paper was ‘Polypropylene – a Novel Thickener Technology with many Surprises’.

The end of the 29th ELGI AGM was sad because we said farewell to friends and associates, yet it was also an opportunity to be present at a global gathering of so many people from the lubricating grease industry.

This AGM has been an outstanding example – our minds have been ignited and filled by a torrent of ideas, information, statistics and visions.

The 30th ELGI AGM is 21-24 April 2018 and will be held at the Grange St. Paul’s Hotel in London. The theme is: Mobility Quo Vadis: The Future of Transportation – cars, planes, boats & trains. Please submit your abstracts by Friday 20 October 2017. Do contact Carol Koopman carol@elgi.demon.nl for further information.
