conversations with more than 200 engineering professionals. The research showed that 72% of respondents believed they had a strong understanding of Industry 4.0, while 39% said they had already started on their Industry 4.0 journeys. The research also showed that 80% of those questioned felt Industry 4.0 would have a positive effect on British manufacturing, with 64% saying it would have a positive effect on maintenance.

But the Eriks’ survey did highlight some causes for concern. It showed that Industry 4.0, and the general trend to increasing digitisation, had a sharp age-related divide. The findings stated that 83% of 25-33 year olds understood the potential of Industry 4.0, compared to just 52% of the over 55s.

“Our findings revealed that the younger generation of engineers appear to have a greater understanding of Industry 4.0,” said Gary Price, international product manager at Eriks. “My concern is that the older generation of engineers, many of whom have achieved very senior positions within industry, are more risk averse in regards to issues such as data security. In the new world of Industry 4.0 those managers need to guide and empower team members who are more comfortable with the technology, and not act as barriers to change.”

Maintec also heard from major companies who are helping companies to implement their Industry 4.0 ambitions. Vodafone gave an interactive overview of how its IIoT infrastructure was connecting machines, devices and objects to the internet, turning them into ‘intelligent’

assets that could communicate with the world around them.
