Collaboration for Accelerated Innovation in the UK Chemical Industry
Established in 1925 in the village of Rawcliffe Bridge in Yorkshire, UK, Croda now employs over 4,200 people, working together as one global team across manufacturing sites and offices in 36 countries, focusing on the development and delivery of innovative, sustainable ingredients that their customers can build upon.
On 15th March 2017, Croda held a technology exchange event with over 35 universities from across the UK at their global headquarters in Yorkshire. Over 50 delegates with technology transfer roles from across Britain’s leading universities attended this knowledge transfer day, the first of its kind for the UK chemical industry, to discuss future collaboration opportunities for the development and commercialisation of new technologies. The agenda is very timely, coming only days after the governments Science and Technology Committee issued a report stating that increased investment in Research and Development by business is crucial if university research is to be transformed into successful commercial products.
The leading association for public sector knowledge exchange and commercialisation, PraxisUnico, jointly organised the event, where Steve Foots (Croda’s Chief Executive and Chair of the Chemistry Growth Partnership) spoke about the importance of business and university partnerships in accelerating innovation across the chemical industry: “Bringing new product innovation to life is embedded in everything we do at Croda. We recognise that innovation will underpin our future growth and it is also critical for the continuing development of the chemical industry. Seeking out and nurturing innovative technologies will help us to meet and exceed our customers’ needs.”
Maxine Ficarra, Executive Director, PraxisUnico further added: “Collaboration like this is hugely important for the advancement and development of industries across the UK. Technology transfer days between businesses like Croda and universities will help to deliver the translation of research outcomes into social and economic impact.”

Croda ran this technology transfer day only a week after receiving the 2017 Corporate LiveWire Innovation & Excellence Award for Innovation in Chemical Manufacturing.
