Ryanair reaches ‘historic’ agreement with BALPA

RYANAIR HAS SIGNED a formal union recognition agreement with the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA), making it the sole representative body for the carrier’s pilots in the UK. Ryanair announced in December that

it would begin negotiations with unions after pilots threatened multiple walk-outs over the Christmas period. Ryanair pilots at nine bases had already

voted to accept a 20 per cent pay rise. The carrier says the remaining six bases have now voted to accept the same deal and claims all of its pilots now earn 20 per cent more than those who fly B737s with Norwegian and Jet2.

The agreement means the airline’s 100 UK-based pilots will have full union representation through the soon-to-be- elected BALPA Ryanair Company Council.

16 BBT March/April 2018 Eddie Wilson, chief people officer at

Ryanair, said the pilots unions at its bases in the EU had been “wasting time” in not delivering the 20 per cent pay rise to their pilots. He gave the example of Dublin, where 35 per cent of pilots are yet to accept the increase. “Ryanair will not allow these unions to delay pay increases to our pilots,” warned Wilson. Brian Strutton, general secretary of

BALPA, commented: “Given Ryanair’s previous hostility toward unions, this agreement is an historic one. “While we were initially sceptical

about Ryanair’s sincerity in offering recognition to us and other unions, our conversations and meetings with them have shown that they are genuine in wanting a constructive trade union relationship.”

the largest in the country. Completion is scheduled for late 2020.

The upgraded hotel will then feature 650 rooms and suites, as well as a new and extended event space. The new tower adjacent to the

existing hotel will house an additional 250 rooms and suites, starting from 32 sqm, as well as a new Club Lounge, which will feature panoramic views of the harbour and the iconic Auckland Tower.

The extension is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2020 in time for the America’s Cup and Asia Pacific Economic Forum (APEC), which will take place in Auckland the following year.
