HOW CLEAN IS YOUR BED? THE SUBJECT OF HOTEL BEDS and mattresses is not often discussed in hotel negotiations when contracting rooms. In fact most people would rather not think about the obvious – such as who slept in the bed the night before, etc.

One pertinent and important question, from a health and safety point of view, is how often the hotel changes its mattresses. The answer given to me varies from five to ten years. Obviously, the fewer years the better (depending on the occupancy rates). So the next time you are having a discussion with your favourite hotel, you now have another topic of conversation. BIG DEVELOPMENT FOR CTM

[CTM signs NDC deal with BA/Iberia] THIS IS ANOTHER GREAT development for CTM. Watch for share price movement on this announcement as BA is a huge partner for this travel company.

@GoodTravelUK We hope everyone enjoyed the @BBTAwards – congratulations to all who were nominated/won an award #BBTA18.

@TheGTMC This is welcome news. Investment in transport networks is fundamental to enabling the government and UK businesses to achieve their shared ambition of growth. We look forward to seeing the positive steps forward following this announcement. (Network Rail to focus on improvements)

Procurement spend data is like oil. It’s often dirty, confusing and hard to extract, but can be turned into real $.

@ChrisPouney My word, and I was only discussing with my procurement colleagues last night that further acquisitions are likely and reduced competition will make procurement of travel tougher in the coming months...#biztravel

@Andrew_Adonis

Despite their failure on East Coast, Chris Grayling has given Virgin a sweetheart deal on West Coast Main Line, without competition, & allowed Stagecoach to bid for future franchises and possibly also keep the East Coast contract as well! Yet more taxpayer bail-outs.

AMERICAN EXPRESS GBT BUYS HRG WELL, IT LOOKS LIKE they have not considered the results of Carillion and Capita in recent times. All these mergers and takeovers only lead to less competition and poor service levels. We have seen it before and it gives the little guys lots of opportunities to compete on service, which always beats a system-based process. Travel Leaders, now the US’s biggest, is taking over Barrhead Travel; Direct Travel is taking over Colpitts, etc; all at one time. This leaves rich pickings for guys with real SLAs and competitive attitudes. Ken McNab, FCILT, FITT, MIoD (via LinkedIn)

I WORK FOR HRG and am very proud of what we do and how we do it. This is an great opportunity for those who embrace future technologies and excellent customer engagement.

@ITMtweets Great night with colleagues at the @BBTAwards! Congratulations to all #BBTA18 winners.

THIS IS A BOLD MOVE. A step- change opportunity to create a world-class business that can deliver for its customers through scale, experience and leading-edge technology. Exciting times for our sector. (via BBT website)

THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY for more customer-focused TMCs to grab new business while Amex tries to assimilate HRG. Biggest is rarely best when it comes to delivering value for the customer. (via BBT website)

APD RUSE?

[Government hints at post-Brexit APD cut] SO, HAVING LOST the first four traffic freedom rights in Europe and goodness only knows what other traffic rights to where else will remain, and with what restrictions, the government is trying to deflect from its incompetence by offering an APD reduction when it has long been under pressure to reduce APD.

Having written twice to Mr Davis and received the most unsatisfactory and amateurish response, I fear that many UK trade and service industries are being sold down the river on an ill-advised and ill- informed populist political adventure for the personal aggrandisement of some mediocre individuals. A380 AIRFARE

[Analysis: Battle of the giants] 24 MONTHS AGO I considered giving the A380 a go from Washington to Paris, expecting that the airfare would be a bit cheaper due to the large capacity of the airliner.

In fact, the airfare was

more than flying on smaller jets on the same route. Go figure that one! Consequently, I have not considered flying on an A380 route since.

As per usual with airlines, coach class travellers don’t get any benefit. (via BBT website)
