he driving factor behind appliance sales is likely to be sustainability. According to the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap), seven million tonnes of food and drink are wasted every year in the UK, amounting to around 20% of all household waste, which puts a huge strain on landfill sites. Energy efficiency According to research carried out by Hotpoint, the top three sustainable actions consumers aim to implement to improve their sustainability are to be aware of their electricity usage, to ensure good energy efficiency in their appliances and to try to lower their water


consumption. So those


appliances with the highest energy ratings will always sell best. Because of the amount of food wastage highlighted by Wrap and publicised in the news in recent years,

Premium


For cooking, multifunctionality is, and will continue to be, a buzzword. But that


consumers have been increasingly looking to cut down their food waste and several appliance manufacturers have responded by adding features to their fridge- freezers that help keep food fresh for longer or tell the user what’s inside, so they’re less likely to buy items they don’t need.


One example is Hotpoint’s Class 7


Total NoFrost fridge-freezer, which includes a Fresh Zone+ for keeping fruit and vegetables fresher for longer, and Active Oxygen technology that it claims keeps the fridge smelling fresh by neutralising unpleasant odours, as well as eliminating the growth of bacteria by up to 90%.


Water consumption Water-saving appliances look set to play an increasingly important role, especially as amendments to Part G of the UK Building Regulations state that the maximum allowable consumption of water in new dwellings is 125 litres per person per day – less, as Whirlpool brand manager Charmaine Warner points out, than the Environment Agency’s figure for the average person of 150 litres per day. Most appliance brands have their own proprietary technology, such as Siemens and Zeolith, which uses the absorbent and heating properties of the mineral Zeolite. This special

multifunctionality will comprise features and functions traditionally only found in professional kitchens, such as sous vide, steam cooking and warming/proving drawers. And for those less confident in the kitchen, many appliances now come equipped with smart apps to assist novice chefs. For example, Indesit’s Turn and Cook app, which is programmed with around 80 recipes. Sleek, built-in, compact and coordinating premium appliances will also be big in 2020 and beyond, particularly with the UK’s ever- shrinking living spaces.


KitchenAid has identified ‘premiumisation’ as a key trend for 2020, “with consumers favouring products that demonstrate and


display their success”, according to channel controller Lee Collett. “Technology drives demand for ‘premiumisation’,” he adds, “and consumers are willing to pay for products that provide them with more time, security and health benefits.” As well as a rise in more premium finishes, such as KitchenAid’s black stainless steel, premiumisation is about premium or advanced features and functions, such as KitchenAid’s Chef Touch technology, which facilitates sous-vide cooking, to ensure the very best results, “com - parable only to that of a fine restaurant”, Collett says.


Smart


Connectivity will also be big across the whole of the appliance and lighting markets, as more become compatible with voice-activated technology, such as Amazon Echo and Google Home.


In the extraction market, smart technology usually means hood-to- hob, which enables

control the hob wirelessly and adjust speeds automatically, so the user can concentrate on cooking. On the topic of lighting, Sensio product manager Neil Oldfield comments: “2020 will be the year when smart technology will really take off in kitchen lighting. So far, it has

just been early adopters and the industry has been working hard to find smart lighting solutions that anyone can adopt and install easily. It has been important to rationalise exactly what is practical and not just provide smart technology for the sake of it. I think at the kbb show in March we will see a lot of demonstrations and advances.” These days range cookers often blend traditional styling with top-class functionality, such as induction hobs and multiple cavities, as well as smart connectivity. Steve Dickson, head of product marketing at Glen Dimplex Home Appliances, adds that the challenge of multigene- rational, ‘multi-meal households’ – with specialist diets or


food intolerances – has created demand for flexible cooking appliances. “Our recent research underlined the

functions for consumers buying a range cooker were having a multifunction oven, the flexibility of two or more oven cavities and a separate grill, plus easy-clean functionality.” Aga Rangemaster director of sales and marketing Iskender Diker adds: “Consumers are seeking new, healthier ways to cook and advancements in technologies allow them to do so.”
