EDITOR’S COMMENT TALKING
ABOUT MORE GENERATIONS...
id you know that one third of UK homes now fall into the multigenerational category? So said the fi ndings from the latest survey from Aviva Insurance. It’s no surprise then that this month’s in-depth focus is on that very subject. And, more specifi cally, of course, the business oppor tunities this growing market throws up for kitchen, bedroom and bathroom retailers. Within this special focus, we talk to renowned kitchen designer Johnny Grey about the principles of multigenerational design and his new 4G
kitchen concept, conceived in collaboration with Professor Peter Gore from Newcastle University’s National Innovation Centre for Ageing (pg 32-35). We also discuss the inclusive design aspect of multigenerational living with specialist designer Adam Thomas (pg 36). His claim that, on average, one-in-fi ve people in the UK have some disability and, therefore, have very specifi c requirements from their kitchens and bathrooms, really adds weight to the notion that this market offers huge potential for those KBB specialists willing to invest the time in educating themselves on this topic. As Thomas says, can you really afford to ignore 20% of the market?
Elsewhere in the issue, following the Government’s announcement of its plans to bring in a mandatory water effi ciency label, we bring you the latest updates on the subject and how it could affect you and your business (news, pg6).
Our case study (pgs 60-63) showcases the design talents of the Day
True team and how they overcame various challenges to meet a demanding brief to redesign an entire two-bedroom apartment – including two bathrooms and a kitchen – in Mayfair, for a property developer. This month’s showroom design masterclass is courtesy of Tom Howley, with a tour of its latest showroom in St Albans (pgs 64-65).
