NEW HOSPITAL PROGRAMME
Technologies, products, and operational practices will inevitably evolve, but a stable framework of interfaces provides a foundation through which that evolution can occur in a controlled and repeatable way. In this respect, the focus on interfaces is not simply a technical requirement of industrialisation. It is one of the mechanisms that enables healthcare infrastructure to adapt, improve, and continue delivering value throughout its operational life.
Conclusion: the standardisation of learning One of the most important shifts within NHP has been the recognition that operational expertise belongs much earlier in the process. Through the Product Development Process (PDP), product working groups, prototyping activities, co-creation, and engagement with industry partners, EFM considerations have been brought much closer to the heart of industrialisation. The development and testing of Hospital 2.0 Products have demonstrated that some of the most significant opportunities to improve whole-life performance are realised when operational requirements inform Product development from the outset, before they are ever deployed onto a scheme. n For Industrialisation professionals, this reinforces that a successful Product is not defined solely by how efficiently it can be delivered, but by how effectively it can be installed, operated, maintained and adapted over time.
n For EFM professionals, it demonstrates that industrialisation is not a conversation happening elsewhere; it is increasingly shaping the environments operational teams will inherit.
The value of industrialisation extends beyond the delivery of individual hospitals. By creating a consistent Product Platform, Hospital 2.0 establishes a foundation through which operational learning, deployment experience, and supply chain innovation can be incorporated into future deployments. In that context, industrialisation is not simply about repeatability. It is about creating the capability to learn and evolve. By combining standardised Products with structured feedback from Trusts, EFM
Consistent approaches to Products and systems allow maintenance teams to build familiarity, transfer knowledge more easily between sites, and apply lessons learned with greater confidence. The benefit is not simply efficiency; it is the creation of an operational environment that is easier to understand, manage, and improve.
teams, designers, contractors, and the supply chain, industrialisation creates a mechanism through which Products, processes, and operational outcomes can be refined over time. The ultimate ambition is not to repeatedly deliver the
same hospital. It is to ensure that every deployment leaves the H2.0 Platform better than it was before. Every lesson captured, every operational insight embedded, and every enhancement applied strengthens the next iteration. Viewed through this lens, the true value of industrialisation is not that it enables hospitals to be repeated, but that it enables them to continuously improve.

Management team for their valuable contribution to the development of this article, particularly Andrew Morris, Warren Hubbard, and Rebecca Trewinnard. This article reflects the ongoing collaboration between the industrialisation and EFM teams, whose shared commitment to improving hospital performance across the asset lifecycle continues to inform product development, operational thinking and continuous improvement across the programme.
