NEW BUILD CDC
The CDC accommodates a range of diagnostic services.
Overall, the adoption of MMC – particularly the full building SIPs solution – resulted in an improved build quality, accelerated programme delivery by 6-8 weeks, and a cost saving of approx. £200 per m2
. This is in
addition to measurable reductions in construction waste, transport emissions, and on-site disruption. The SIPs building envelope also provided strong
airtightness and thermal consistency, supporting the building’s ultra-low energy performance.
Making an impact in the local community and the wider region The Wye Valley Community Diagnostic and Treatment Centre is one of 170 permanent CDC sites across England approved by NHS England. Combined, these facilities are playing a vital role in helping to identify and treat illnesses quicker and closer to home, further helping reduce pressure on hospitals and enabling speedier diagnosis so patients receive potentially life-saving care sooner. The Wye Valley site itself is expected to deliver more
than 30,000 tests annually, as part of a network of centres across the Midlands. Dr Jess Sokolov, regional
medical director for NHS England in the Midlands, explains the impact this is having: “A key part of the national Elective Reform Plan is to provide local people with more convenient access to tests and scans away from hospital. And within a year of the plan’s launch, we have established a network of these centres across the Midlands while reducing the backlog for surgery in our region by more than six per cent. “This means that local people benefit from direct referral
from their local doctor to an expanded range of scans and tests on their doorstep, while waiting less time for often life-changing surgery.” Speaking about the local impact, Russell Hardy,
chairman at Wye Valley NHS Trust, said: “The opening of the new community diagnostic and treatment centre is a significant milestone for healthcare in Herefordshire and marks a major step forward in bringing healthcare closer to where people live and work. “This state-of-the-art facility, which has been seeing patients since the end of September, is a cornerstone of our commitment to deliver faster, more accessible care for our local communities. “The calming ambience and friendly environment of

Designed around a flexible chassis, the building has been designed to enable straightforward reconfiguration over time without complex modifications. This provides the potential for complimentary services to be integrated on the site, as the model of care evolves.

the building is proving hugely popular with our patients, and our staff members are enjoying the modern facilities and latest diagnostic equipment – an added attraction for colleagues at the Trust. “By making essential scans and tests more accessible,
we’re putting our patients at the heart of our services. This eases the pressure on our diagnostic facilities at Hereford County Hospital and frees them up to be used by patients who come in via ED and need urgent scans and treatment. “It also means that non-urgent patients get the diagnosis and treatment that they need more quickly.”
Accessibility and longevity As community diagnostic centres continue to reshape how care is delivered, the Wye Valley Community Diagnostic and Treatment Centre demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform what might otherwise feel clinical into something welcoming and reassuring. By combining patient-centred planning, supportive staff environments, and low-energy design, the building creates a calm setting for essential tests while delivering long-term operational value. Flexible planning and robust fabric ensure the centre can adapt alongside evolving healthcare needs, reinforcing its role as both a valuable community asset and a sustainable investment in the future of NHS diagnostic services.
