IHEEM TECHNICAL PLATFORMS: ACTIVITY, DEVELOPMENTS, AND PRIORITIES
The IHEEM Technical Platforms continue to provide an important forum for technical leadership, professional development, knowledge sharing, and collaboration across the healthcare estates sector. During 2026, the platforms have progressed a range of initiatives, from the development of Authorising Engineer frameworks and registers to the production of technical guidance, CPD opportunities, and engagement with wider changes in healthcare standards.
To showcase the breadth of technical knowledge and expertise within the Institute, and to reflect some of the work being progressed across the platforms in support of the wider healthcare estates community, this feature brings together updates from a selection of IHEEM TPs. With Healthcare Estates taking place in October, it provides a timely opportunity to highlight some of the activity, developments, and priorities being taken forward by IHEEM members across a diverse range of specialist disciplines.

Fire Safety
The past year has been an important period of development for the Fire Safety Technical Platform. As the sector
continues to respond to the increasing complexity of fire safety within healthcare environments, updates to HTM Firecode, and IHEEM’s partnership with NHSE, the platform has focused on strengthening its foundations, in developing the AE (Fire) framework, and bringing together a wider range of expertise from across the healthcare fire safety community. The key area of work during 2026 has been the development of a framework for the AE (Fire) role. With no formal framework or register for fire AEs prior to IHEEM’s partnership with NHSE, the platform sought to define what independent fire safety assurance should look like in healthcare, and establish the competence and responsibilities necessary for an AE (Fire), to provide assurance consistently across the NHS estate. This project has involved considerable discussion and engagement within the platform and wider IHEEM staff and members, recognising that the healthcare environment and changes to guidance in the sector presents particular challenges. The framework is intended to support this balance and provide a sound basis for further development and consultation. The current intention is for the register to go live in early 2027. development, the platform has continued to support the development of guidance notes and supporting materials. While these have developed alongside the wider programme of work, they remain
