April 2022

I have a very clear memory of crossing the casino floor at the Luxor in Las Vegas over a decade ago. America was fighting in Afganistan and the television screens above one of the central bars showed troops landing and conducting operations in Kandahar province. I was conscious that I was the only person watching the news. America had begun its conflict in Afganistan another decade earlier and no one stopped to comment or lift their heads from their drinks, snacks or slots to pay any attention to the fighting playing out like a videogame on the monitors.

The juxtapositon of the two images; of fighting and conflict contrasting with entertainment and consumerism, returned this month as we worked upon this issue. We have multiple stories and research commissioned in advance looking at the impact of legislation on the UK online market as the Gambling Act is reformed. We discuss Latvia and Lithuania’s gambling markets without the context of the war taking place in Ukraine, which now casts a shadow over everything - politcially, economically and in terms of the human diaspora fleeing the conflict.

WE’RE JUST EMERGING FROM THE PANDEMIC, WHICH CHANGED EVERYTHING, AND NOW WE’RE WRITING AT THE UKRAINE WAR

We’re just emerging from the pandemic, which changed everything, and now in the same issue we’re writing about Parimatch and Evoplay relocating staff, with their colleagues joining the fight for their country, while at the same time reviewing the latest Easter-themed slot games from suppliers.

We have been planning our booth at ICE for months, contacting companies about the games they’re showing in London all the while feeling that it’s inconsequential. I’m printing magazines, posters and business cards for the first time in two years and I know I should be excited at the prospect. ICE London 2022 was always going to be a reduced and reconstituted show, a very different show from the 20 others I’ve been to in the past - but it was supposed to be a return to normal. Back in the Luxor bar I thought to myself angrily - is anyone paying attention? Now I’m going to an entertainment show when there’s a war taking place in Europe. I’m not sure I can square that.
