Other active packaging applications include a new barrier adhesive for flexible packaging from Dow Packaging. The company says the new Adcote L86-500 technology expands the boundaries of recyclable packaging by increasing functionality. The new adhesive is claimed to help maximise resource efficiency, favourably influence packaging cost, enhance recyclability and optimise the shelf life of food packaging. AdcoteTM L86-500 enables the replacement of PET, metallised and aluminium- based packaging structures with an all-polyolefin solution which is easily recyclable in existing processes.

“Sustainability is increasingly important in the food and beverage industries, with all members of the value chain seeking to find innovative ways to promote recyclability while remaining cost com- petitive,” says Jaroslaw Jelinek, EMEA Marketing Manager for Adhesives at Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics. The company says that the Adcote L86-500 adhesive is designed for medium barrier applica- tions and can provide additional protection against oxygen and moisture. It can allow production of packaging that is recyclable in standard recycling schemes and offers the same shelf life performance as current PET-based packaging. Dow says that it has polyolefin packages using the new adhesive suitable for aroma and barrier-sensitive applica- tions, such as coffee and cereal pouches, snack and dry pet food packs as well as wet wipes packages. When replacing PET with polyolefin, users can also benefit from a reduced heat requirement on sealing lines; Dow’s Affinity polyolefin elastomers seal at lower temperatures and can help avoid damage to the outside polyolefin layer. Recyclability was also one of the goals for Solvay Specialty Polymers, which together with Husky
Injection Molding Systems, has launched Verian High Barrier Polyester (HBP), a recyclable line of high-performance polymers for use in PET bottles and films that is the latest addition to Solvay’s portfolio of speciality polymers for barrier packaging. At the recent Drinktec exhibition, Husky ran a HyPET HPP5 fully integrated preform injection moulding system running Verian HBP as a barrier layer in a 17g carbonated soft drink multi-layer application. CSP Technologies developed its Activ-Seal
orifice-reducing closure using desiccant gas scavenging technology. Built directly into the screw cap closure, the scavenger can control levels of moisture and volatile off-gases to help to ensure product stability and extend shelf life. The gas scavenging technology is built directly into an induction-sealed, tamper-evident screw cap and can offer a combination of moisture, volatile organic compounds (VOC), and odour management. By providing optimised capacity and uptake
rates, the company says the Activ-Seal closures offer a significant improvement over more tradi- tional methods of ensuring product stability, such as inserting canisters or sachets. These require additional insertion equipment and carry the risk of accidental ingestion. Complexity and cost is also reduced.
