4. SP TLIGHT ON THE METHODIST CHURCH
Origins The Methodist Church is a denomination within the Protestant tradition. Today, there are about 70 million Methodists worldwide. There are about 53,000 Methodists in Ireland.
The Methodist Church began as a reform movement within the Anglican tradition. It was founded in the 18th century by two brothers, John Wesley (1703– 1791) and Charles Wesley (1707–1788). Both men were priests of the Church of England.
The original aim of the Wesley brothers was to revitalise the Church of England. They believed that it had largely lost touch with the needs of ordinary working-class people in England at that time.
