REMEMBER! A sign is any image, word or gesture that communicates one and only one idea.
Some signs are more important than others. Think about the following: n
This means ‘Advanced direction to motorway services’. You can choose to ignore this sign if you do not wish to stop for something to eat and drink.
n
This means ‘Stop your vehicle at this point’. Unlike the previous sign, you are not allowed to use your discretion when you see this sign; you must always obey it.
Clearly signs are very useful abbreviations.
REMEMBER! An abbreviation is a shorthand way of communicating specific information.
Signs help us to avoid confusion. They allow us to give and receive clear, quick and sometimes life-saving messages that can be easily understood.
The Meaning of Symbol
A national flag is of great importance to every country. It stands for many different things. For example: the land itself, the people who live there and all the things they believe are important and worthwhile. For this reason, you expect your national flag to be treated with respect.
Let us turn to explore the meanings contained in two national flags: 1. The flag of the Republic of Ireland
The flag of the Republic of Ireland is known as the Tricolour. It was designed by Thomas Francis Meagher. He deliberately chose the three colours of green, white and orange to express a great hope for the people of Ireland. He believed that there could only be peace on this island when the members of both political traditions, Nationalist and Unionist, treated one another with respect.
Notice how each of the flag’s three coloured segments are of equal width:
1. The green segment: This represents the Nationalist tradition.
