Huddleston stepped off the footpath to let Desmond Tutu and his mother walk by because he believed that it was the right thing to do. He realised that, in a community, we need to care for one another and look after one another’s needs in practical ways. Above all, Huddleston knew that the most basic need we all have is to be treated with respect.
A community can only succeed when we respect one another. We can show our respect in two ways – through communication and sharing.
REMEMBER!
Communication happens when we listen to one another and are honest with one another. Sharing means dividing things fairly so that we all have what we need.
You cannot play a positive and worthwhile role in your community if you are not prepared to communicate and share with those around you.
The Roles We Play
Imagine you are a member of a famous soccer team. This team is made up of a number of players. Each player performs a particular role.
REMEMBER! A role is a specific job you do or contribution you can make to your community.
Look at the following diagram. It illustrates the different roles played by the members of a soccer team.
The mid-fielders must pass the ball to the forwards / strikers.
The forwards / strikers are tasked with scoring goals.
One of these players acts as your team captain.
The goalkeeper is the last line of defence.
The defenders must block the opposing forwards.
The coach / manager on the sideline issues instructions to you and your teammates and makes substitutions when necessary.
