REMEMBER! Divine inspiration means that: ò God guided each evangelist as he wrote his own account of Jesus’s story.
ò Each evangelist only recorded the things God wanted to reveal and in the way God wanted to reveal them.
Christians believe that the Gospels were written under divine inspiration.
However, this does not mean that everything Jesus said was recorded in exactly the same way as he had said it. Christians believe that God guided the evangelists to truthfully record the meaning of what Jesus had said.
Think about this modern example: a news report on a politician’s speech
This will not give you a word-for-word account of what the politician has said. There is not enough airtime available to do that. Instead the reporter will give you a short summary of what was said. While the reporter might not use the exact same words the politician used when delivering the speech, the reporter will try to accurately pass on the meaning of what was said.
It was the same for the evangelists. They wanted to accurately pass on the meaning of what Jesus had said and done. They were less interested in the exact way in which he had said or done it. This is why Christians say that you can trust the Gospels to tell you the truth about Jesus.
