FEATURED FACULTY

dedicated to growth and progress

Dr. Kathy Carter

Dr. Kathy Carter is an associate professor at CSU who has worked hard on the curriculum of the Exercise Science program to align it with accreditation standards. “A lot of the focus this summer will be on taking a good program and making it even better,” she says.

Dr. Carter is a registered dietician with an undergraduate degree in nutrition. After going to work in a nursing home, Dr. Carter went on to get her master’s in Exercise Physiology from the University

of Louisville. She then attended the University of Georgia to earn her Ph.D. in Kinesiology, focusing on motor control. At the same time, she was also a taekwondo instructor.

“I hope students leave with a better perspective of what the human body is capable of doing,” Dr. Carter says. “How do we take care of our body? How does the human body change with age and how does that affect you?”

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

A Workout for the brain

Brandon Hayes “I

think Exercise Science

is one of the best major programs offered at Central State,” says Brandon Hayes, who is currently enrolled in the program. “Some of the concepts are challenging, but what we’re learning is really interesting. This is a good program for people who enjoy an active lifestyle.”

Hayes, who hopes to enroll in an Occupational Therapy program after graduation, says Exercise Science is essential to understanding muscle function. “I want to work

with kids who have cerebral palsy and other individuals who struggle with everyday movement,” he

tells the

CENTRALIANPLUS. “With this degree, I feel like I can do anything. It’s been a great decision for me.”

When it comes to faculty and staff in the exercise program, Hayes says Dr. Carter is one of his favorite professors. “She’s a great teacher and a fantastic adviser,” he says. “You can tell she really wants to see her students succeed.”
