Xenia, Ohio is a city of 27,000 located 15 miles east of Dayton, Ohio. Founded in 1803, the city is considered part of the Miami Valley and is now the county seat of Greene County. Quaint eateries and retail shops line the streets of Xenia’s charming downtown. The Greene County Courthouse, with its tall clocktower, stands boldly in the city’s government center.
Once an important hub for railroad passengers, Xenia is home to many historic houses and buildings. Unfortunately, a category F5 tornado hit Xenia in 1974, destroying much of the city. However, a rebuilding
effort followed, resulting in the construction of many new buildings.
In recent years,
270 miles of train tracks that ran through Xenia have been converted to bicycle paths, giving the city its reputation as “Bicycle Capital of the Midwest.”
Central State has long enjoyed a relationship with Xenia as its closest municipality. Every day, students, faculty, and staff commute from Xenia to Wilberforce, Ohio, to go to work or school at CSU. Many citizens of Xenia are proud to call themselves CSU alums and have gone on to promote their community using
the education they received as Marauders. Students who live on campus often find themselves in Xenia for shopping and entertainment.
Since taking her seat as president of Central State University, Dr. Cynthia Jackson-Hammond has been looking for ways to become more engaged with the city of Xenia. University leadership would like to meet the educational needs of not only the young people of Xenia, but also adults already in the workforce who would like their education.
