Joyce Beatty
U.S. Congresswoman Class of 1972
United States Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, Dayton native and 1972 Central State graduate, has represented the 3rd District of Ohio since 2013.

Beatty, a Delta Sigma Theta member, serves as vice-chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and holds leadership positions in numerous coalitions. Her successes began long before Congress, as senior VP of Outreach and Engagement at The Ohio State University, and five terms in the Ohio General Assembly. There, she became the first female Democratic House Leader in Ohio’s history. A dedicated advocate of education and women’s equality, Beatty fought for effective legislation for Ohio’s public-school financial literacy requirements and
life-saving women’s health screenings. Richard Boykin

As a Cook County Board Commissioner, Richard R. Boykin, a 1990 graduate of Central State and Chicago attorney, led and won the effort to repeal the sweetened beverage tax in Chicago which disproportionately penalizes those in lower income brackets. Through his work in criminal
