Students who wish to study the beneficial relationship between exercise and the human body can now major in a new degree option. The Exercise Science degree program is designed to focus on how movement affects physiology. The program launched in January of 2018 as part of the Department of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and there are now 80 students enrolled.
“The courses are very science- based,” says Dr. Kathy Carter, a professor in the Exercise Science program. “We delve into anatomy and physiology to track changes in the body. There’s a lot of biology and science before students get into the fun stuff.”
The Exercise Science program is designed to be practical in nature so that students can take what they’ve learned and get certified by organizations like the National Strength and Conditioning
Association. Many students will move onto
graduate programs in fields like Sports Medicine or Biomechanics. “The nice thing about Exercise Science is it is a springboard degree. You can take it and go in just about any direction,” says Dr. Carter.
Students in this new program learn such important concepts as exercise prescription, physical testing, and assessment skills. Beyond the science, Dr. Carter says
Exercise Science is a
program that is best approached by students who love being around people. “You have to teach people how to do things, why they do things, and make sure they want to continue to do those things.”
Fields related to Exercise Science are expected to see increased growth in the future. The Bureau of Labor Statistics speculates that 1,500 jobs will be needed by 2024 to keep up with America’s aging population. Average salaries in this area have grown by 20 percent since 2012.
