What’s Cooking?


Jack Ryan, of flooring supplier and installer Naos Floors, has been a professional on home renovation and design platform Houzz.co.uk for several years. Here, he shares his observations for kitchen flooring in 2019 and predictions for 2020 trends.


Popular Porcelain


Porcelain is certainly a material on the up and we find that customers on Houzz are choosing this over natural stone more and more. I guess the main reasoning for this is the durability of it, and the fact that it has advanced greatly in the past few years. The Italian factories we deal with have some great choices these days, with some tiles even fooling people into thinking they are real stone or wood. Porcelain as a material is totally non-porous, meaning that you cannot stain it or cause damage through improper maintenance. Therefore, it is a popular choice in a family home, where kids and pets will try their best to leave a mark. Saying all that though, we will always have a soft spot for natural stone and, when you see a real limestone or marble floor laid, they have a “wow factor” that, in our opinion, cannot be matched with a tile.


Listen to Your Customer


As a retailer, I think the most important thing to do is provide your clients with the right information for their needs. Ask about their project, colour schemes and lifestyle, and then offer them materials that would both suit their design but also that work with how they live. For example, a customer that has young children and lives in the countryside may lean more towards porcelain for its ease of maintenance. However, if they express an attraction to natural stone, then providing them with detailed information on how to seal and maintain it

is vital. It is also worthwhile discussing the installation side of their project and offering some technical knowledge. A poor installation can cause endless problems, so offering a little bit of advice goes a long way.


What’s Next?


I think, going into next year, we will see some bolder choices for kitchen floors, with more people opting for stronger colours and more decorative options. We have noticed people are choosing to avoid the grey tiles that have been popular in recent years and are instead going for tiles with a little more interest. I think clients are becoming more conscious about design and we see people who’ve used Houzz are better educated on their likes and dislikes, as well as the latest trends, as they can browse inspiration from the recent projects uploaded by professionals. I for one would be happy to lose the grayscale styles and see a bit more colour appearing in kitchens in 2020.
