FOCUS ON WOOD The Only Way Is Up
Engineered wood from Havwoods was chosen to create an open and airy floorspace for a refreshed and newly-extended London property.
How do you turn a one-bedroom maisonette in East London into a light, airy and sociable Parisian-style apartment? This was the challenge given to Shacklewell Architects, a London-based architectural firm which specialises in adapting traditional properties for modern living.
Well-recognised for their work in loft conversions and extensions, the architects’ solution was to upwardly extend the property, located in London’s Amhurst Road, completely opening up the space below. By creating a Mansard roof extension to house the bedrooms and bathroom, the property became a two- storey maisonette with two bedrooms. The ground floor, which had previously been the entire apartment, was then used to create a large, open-plan kitchen/ living/dining area.
Knowing that the choice of flooring was an integral part of the property transformation, the architects turned to Havwoods to provide high-quality engineered wood flooring for the downstairs area. In-keeping with the desired chic style for the apartment, Shacklewell chose wide-plank engineered oak flooring from Havwoods’ Henley collection. These single 200mm+ planks accentuate the feeling of space in large, free-flowing areas, in a colour and finish which effortlessly complements the surrounding fixtures and fittings.
