Recruiting employees from outside the FM industry opens opportunities and uncovers talent that enhance a business, argues Karen Calver of Metzger.
Change in culture, changing in recruitment There is a growing need to consider how and where facilities management organisations recruit their top talent. In fact, some organisations are changing tack on their recruitment strategies already and looking beyond the confines of the industry.
This is being driven by a combination of factors, such as the tight margins of the industry, growing technology, any negative economic impacts causing job cuts and subsequent industry saturation. There’s also the constant evolution of working culture, building design, increased digitisation – all of these stimulate the need for change in FM service delivery.
Successful FM is typically all about the consumer; whether it’s delivering technical services, health and nutrition, or maintaining spaces for work or play. The millennial consumer has also influenced FM delivery in new ways and demands a refresh of solutions and the right people to find them.

Consequently, there is a growing need to find commercial leaders who can manage the increasing tech-based infrastructure that is transforming FM. Now, there is the Internet of Things (IoT) which allows remote management of services; data analytics enables more precisely planned maintenance of buildings, their assets and facilitates more informed decision making.

With this in mind, recruiters must be creative with their search and selection strategies.
