FEATURE A HANDY WORKPLACE RECIPE

Caroline Stanley, UK Head of Marketing at Kimberly-Clark Professional highlights how the changing workplace impacts on hygiene following Global Handwashing Day.

Millennials demand more than just money, craving variety and excitement through a better working environment. The status quo is changing and by 2020, 40% of the global office workforce will become more transitory with increased numbers of contractors, whilst perception of work is shifting from a physical office to an experience, something that you do rather than go to.

The workplace is changing fast and businesses need to adapt to meet the needs of their shifting workforce including what effect this has on hygiene, health and staff wellbeing.

Businesses are now seeing the value of crafting a superior office experience. There is increased understanding by employers that a great workplace can heighten employee engagement, attract and retain talent, whilst also maximising productivity. In a recent survey, 91% of Corporate Real Estate (CRE) leaders said the physical workplace is a fundamentally important or critical factor in securing superior workers and enhancing their wellbeing.

The workplace experience can also be designed to support corporate culture, objectives and strategy, but we ask, ‘why does all this often stop at the washroom door?’ The facts speak for themselves. Every employee visits the office washroom up to five times daily (62% three-four times; 20% one-two times; 13% five-six times). Around 77% rated the toilets/WC as important service features, but only 51% were satisfied with the experience.

“There is increased understanding

by employers that a great workplace can heighten employee engagement, attract and retain talent, whilst also maximising productivity.”

There is no doubt that improving the washroom experience can positively impact how caring employees perceive their organisation to be. And employees feel that the office washroom experience makes more of a difference to them than two-thirds of the other perks they receive. Therefore workplace initiatives like Global Handwashing Day, which took place on 15th October, provides great opportunities for employers to consider the benefits and value of improving the overall washroom experience for their employees.

With Global Handwashing Day 2018 linking hand hygiene and food with its theme ‘Clean Hands – a recipe for health’, we wanted to focus on how employees often eat at their desks or in meetings, using their hands and fingers. With increased ‘hot-desking’ and shared meeting

spaces, proper hand washing and drying before and after food becomes even more important to help prevent the spread of nasty bacteria and illnesses. We also wanted to celebrate our customers for choosing Scott and the direct impact they’re having on their employees’ health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Kimberly-Clark Professional supported facilities managers on Global Handwashing Day with a range of tools to help them champion hand hygiene, health and wellbeing in the workplace in relation to snacking and eating. It created a special Scott Clean toolkit to provide FMs with everything they needed to engage their guests and employees to enhance hand hygiene and maximise infection prevention.

The Scott Clean toolkit included hand hygiene posters and washroom mirror stickers to display in and around the workplace, and hand hygiene postcards for employees. Kimberly-Clark Professional worked with a number of customers in the large office sector and healthcare sector to hold events on Global Handwashing Day to increase awareness of hand hygiene with employees, supporting overall health and wellbeing.

To encourage maximum employee participation on the day itself, the kit included healthy snacks, plus a selfie photo frame and Global Handwashing Day themed novelties. Kimberly-Clark Professional also made a Scott Clean eToolkit available to help FMs spread the word via their company’s online channels and social media.

Kimberly-Clark Professional works in partnership with its customers on a number of initiatives all-year-round to champion employee satisfaction through hand hygiene, and to help deliver a superior customer experience.
