The SMS server network should be separated from the office network by isolating to its own network zone and the firewalls and VLANs configured to allow only required and specified traffic. Communication between all SMS servers should be secured by applying a server-to-server Internet Protocol Security (IPSec)layer. Importantly the SMS should be configured with roles that control access to the system, and designated tasks and responsibilities.


Security objectives Before implementing electronic security systems, key objectives need to be established, for example, defining goals and expectations related to capturing and using video data and related metadata. Understanding the risks to the customer and the technical risks from the deployed solution is key to managing the overall system security.


Using a structured Threat and Risk Analysis (TRA) process ensures that today’s risks are captured, mitigation measures are put in place and when the TRA is repeated the overall system security is reassessed and improved. It’s a moving target and to be successful, customers and vendors alike need to be ultra-vigilant to the threat.


A shared understanding of security objectives makes it is easier to secure the SMS and maintain data integrity. With security objectives in place, it is easier to address the operational aspects of securing the SMS, such as how to prevent data from being compromised and responding to
