COVER STORY ON THE ROAD TO ZERO WASTE

Method is a visible, flexible and beautiful, waste solution for facilities. Method Co-founder Steven Korner talks about how organisations can recycle more, and waste less.

With our knowledge of design, and passion for sustainability we have reimagined the look and functionality of organisations’ recycling systems, the result is a game-changer for FM.

Method began in 2011 when my wife, India, and I travelled NZ in a van selling bins, liners and recycling products. We saw an opportunity to create significant change - everywhere we went, facilities seemed to have old- fashioned, ugly bins that were hidden away and ineffective. These organisations talked about sustainability, but their waste-recycling strategies were outdated. We believed that improving a bin’s aesthetics and functionality would make a difference. It did.

“When employees have a bin under

their desk, they tend to throw all waste into that bin without separation.”

Thousands of Method bins have been delivered around the globe and can be found in some of the world’s greatest facilities, including the Sydney Cricket Ground; Qantas, a thought-leading facility in New York; and large property managers, such as Dexus, who are providing bins for some of their tenants.

Method’s flexible, colour-coded bins form recycling stations that visibly enhance waste sorting. They are designed to meet UK standards creating an effective waste solution that suits any workplace, facility or space where people create waste. Better waste separation means less office garbage and organisations spending less on waste collection and disposal.

Our products resonate with organisations on several levels. Unlike traditional bins, ours complement rather than detract from building design. They send a statement to stakeholders that the organisation is serious about sustainability.

Method first delivered to the UK in March 2018, to leading architecture firm Foster + Partners, and a famous British venture capital firm. In September, we opened our first office in London as we continue to find wider support for our sustainable waste management solution, particularly with the current trend towards zero waste to landfill.

High return on investment Cost savings are another factor. When employees have a bin under their desk, they tend to throw all waste into that bin without separation. By using multiple, colour-coded bins with icons, employees are encouraged to separate papers and plastics, or general waste from that which can be recycled. It’s a more nuanced recycling approach.

The average office employee produces two-four kilograms of waste daily. Reduction of general waste in facilities that have implemented the Method bins is considerable - such as one facility that decreased general waste from 70% to 30% - this represents a substantial saving for an office that might have 1,000 employees producing up to 4,000kg of waste each day. If your goal is zero waste to landfill, Method’s colour-coded bins can significantly reduce your general waste and the environmental impact of any disposal method.

In addition to better waste separation, our design makes it easier for cleaners to remove waste. Instead of removing waste from lots of bins under desks, cleaners remove rubbish from centralised recycling stations that have bins with a design that makes rubbish removal faster and more hygienic.

Our patented bag retainer system holds liners in place and hides them from sight, making them easier for cleaners to remove and replace. A large office can spend approximately £2420 per year on bins (based on bin and liner costs for more than 110 bins). A comparable Method recycling station costs £1230 per year because fewer bins and bin liners are used.

Moreover, the liners in our bins, using the above example, take less than 10 minutes to change in total. Changing 110 standard bin liners (at 30 seconds each) takes 55 minutes. The upshot is lower office-cleaning costs because Method bins are faster to change and require fewer liners. Organisations that have hundreds of bins under desks can have a deceptively large cleaning bill over a year, all due to poor bin design. The bins quickly pay for themselves.
