Red/green traffic light systems situated outside washrooms are also increasingly being used to inform people when a cubicle is free. This helps to prevent queueing and makes washroom use more efficient.
Some toilets are even using technology to monitor the user’s health. For example, Japanese company Toto has developed the Wellness Toilet that uses artificial intelligence to analyse human waste, while sensors in the seat records the user’s pulse and blood pressure.
The Rochester Institute of Technology in New York has also developed a smart toilet that can track the user’s blood pressure, blood oxygen levels and other heart data. The

U-Scan by Withings is designed to be placed inside the toilet bowl at home, where it gathers health data from the user’s urine. The device provides nutrition tips and hydration advice, while also allowing women to track their ovulation cycle.
Wisecracking robots with disarmingly humanoid eyes are bound to attract more attention than the less obtrusive Internet of Things (IoT) systems that work behind the scenes to streamline cleaning. Yet in the future, it is predicted that most cleaning companies will use a combination of people and robots to populate their fleets and optimise their operations – and when this occurs, robots will become an accepted part of cleaning rather than the talking point they are today.
In the meantime, technological systems with a lower profile will continue to be invaluable in the washroom – in their own quiet way.
