WINTER MAINTENANCE
Ensuring business safety
Julian Gaze, Managing Director of Janitorial Direct, discusses winter maintenance preparation to ensure smooth business operations this winter.
As winter approaches, businesses have to tackle unique challenges in order to maintain the safety, cleanliness and efficiency of their buildings. Having a robust winter maintenance plan is key in preventing the spread of germs and viruses among staff and visitors, ensuring a safe facility and minimising the risk of slips or injuries, both indoors and outdoors.
Effective dirt and moisture control
at entrances Entrances are the first point of defence in any maintenance strategy, especially in winter when rain, ice, debris and mud are far more likely to be brought in on the bottom of shoes. Investing in high-quality entrance matting is extremely beneficial in controlling the amount of dirt and moisture brought inside. Not only can mats help to maintain the aesthetic appeal of floors, but they also play a significant role in reducing the slip risks associated with wet surfaces.
A more effective matting system may include scraper mats outside to remove coarse dirt and then absorbent mats inside to capture moisture. Regular cleaning and maintenance of mats is essential to ensure their efficiency, and properly maintained mats can extend the lifespan of flooring, reducing the need for frequent, intensive cleaning, leading to cost savings and improved safety.
30 | TOMORROW'S CLEANING Proactive ice management outdoors
Winter conditions often lead to icy walkways and car parks, thus creating significant safety hazards. Proactive ice management is not just about reacting to snow or ice build- up, but anticipating it: using de-icing materials such as salt should be a routine part of winter maintenance. However, application timing is crucial; spreading de-icer before a freeze is far more effective than trying to tackle thick ice after it has formed.
Ice management should extend beyond simple salting; it involves regular inspection of high-risk areas, prompt removal of snow and ensuring that drainage systems are functioning correctly to prevent water accumulation and refreezing. Investing in quality ice management tools and training staff on best practices ensures safety while minimising downtime.
A focus on floorcare
Maintaining clean and safe floors during winter will likely require more than just traditional mopping, especially in facilities with high foot traffic. Scrubber dryers provide an efficient solution by combining scrubbing, drying and dirt removal in a single pass – an approach that not only improves cleaning efficiency but also reduces floor drying time, significantly lowering the risk of slips.
