How technology and data are shaping the industry
Joanne Gilliard, CEO at Jangro, explores how innovation is transforming and strengthening the cleaning sector.
The past five years have been tough for the cleaning industry. Both the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit presented significant challenges – disrupted staffing, supply chains and operational protocols. However, technology and data have proven to be crucial tools in addressing these issues and continue to drive forward, revolutionising and enhancing the industry’s offerings.
Humans vs robots
There is often concern that artificial intelligence (AI) and automation will replace human jobs. However, the reality is that while certain tasks may be automated, new roles are inevitably created that require human oversight and management. The workforce must adapt and evolve, embracing these new tools and methods.
Innovations such as automated cleaning robots, now known as ‘cobots’ (collaborative robots), have transformed the industry. Cobots work in tandem with human operatives by handling repetitive tasks such as floor scrubbing, freeing human workers to concentrate on more intricate and specialised cleaning duties. This human-robot collaboration not only boosts efficiency but also optimises the allocation of cleaning operatives, enhancing overall productivity.
AI can also help human operatives deliver the highest standards. For example, Jangro is launching an AI chat feature to its website soon. This state-of-the-art tool will initially focus on carpet care, offering practical advice on the best techniques for cleaning different types of floors, as well as product recommendations and troubleshooting tips.
Smart cleaning
Data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT) technology have become invaluable resources in cleaning maintenance. IoT technology has enabled the development of smart devices, which can monitor various aspects of a building’s environment, such as occupancy levels and air quality.
By leveraging data, companies can optimise cleaning schedules, monitor supply usage and track staff performance. Understanding how a building is used – such as the flow of personnel through reception areas, canteens, washrooms and monitoring desk-use – can help tailor cleaning schedules to the specific needs of the environment. Over time, patterns emerge, allowing

contractors to adjust cleaning protocols based on actual usage, rather than fixed schedules.
Combining AI with data-driven approaches can lead to smarter, more efficient and more effective cleaning solutions. AI uses the data analytics to optimise cleaning routes and schedules, ensuring thorough and efficient service. It uses data to tailor cleaning routines to specific needs, such as focusing on high-traffic areas more frequently, and can make real-time adjustments, such as increasing the frequency during specific seasons.
What’s more, clients increasingly demand transparency in cleaning operations. They want to know when and how spaces are cleaned, who performed the cleaning and what products were used. Technology enables this level of transparency through detailed reporting and real-time data access. This not only builds trust but also ensures accountability and compliance with health and safety standards.
Digital learning
E-learning platforms continue to grow in popularity due to the versatility they offer, allowing cleaning staff to access training materials and certifications online. Jangro’s award- winning training platform, the Learning Management Solution (LMS), is fully interactive, engaging and offers a flexible approach to training.
Highly accessible, it’s optimised for all types of devices and has been accredited by the CPD Certification Service. The modules, covering a wide range of topics, have varying lengths, and because they are all online, staff are able to train remotely and flexibly, at their own pace. This flexibility has been crucial in upskilling workers, ensuring they're equipped to handle new cleaning protocols and technologies, and can perform their duties safely, efficiently and cost-effectively.
By embracing technology and leveraging data, businesses can navigate today’s challenges and emerge stronger. Automated cleaning solutions, IoT-enabled devices and data analytics are not just tools for survival, but catalysts for innovation and growth. As the industry continues to evolve, the integration of technology and data will be key to building a resilient and sustainable future.
