10 Questions with... Ian Hooper

, Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the

Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Ian Hooper, Managing Director at Hooper Services.

1 2

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? An apprentice electrician for the MOD.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? The second company I worked for specialised in

industrial heating, but also sold industrial vacuum cleaners which cleaned out oil-fired heating systems.

3 4

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?

Never give up!

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?

Canada, because it’s a beautiful country and I would like to see the wildlife.

5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

This is a big one for me: more training, more understanding of what cleaning equipment does and how to look after it, and more recognition for the cleaning professionals and the rates of pay.

6 7

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM? Listen, learn, and never judge anyone.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE?

Offer more service and training to the cleaning industry, as we do seem to have confusion on how or what should be done sometimes, we need to get it right. I would also like to slow down, look after my daughter more as she requires my care, and spend more time with my wife and son.

8 9

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY

BE AND WHY? Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, and the Queen. It would be very frank and open, with mutual respect but no one would have their titles.

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

All organisations – be it FM, hospitals, schools, care homes, factories etc – need to recognise that you get what you pay for. The whole industry needs to focus on training, development and innovation. If this is done, the future will be fantastic, but if they do not, it will only be when another pandemic comes that they will react, and that might be too late.

Antony Law, Chief Commercial Officer at The Churchill Group, asks:

WHAT IS YOUR BEST EXAMPLE OF CUSTOMER SERVICE, THAT YOU HAVE PERSONALLY

RECEIVED IN FM? “Thank you for sorting things out” – that is what we are here for, to problem solve and take the stress away from you.
