Shielding the fusion future


The UK’s atomic energy authority needed enhanced protection against COVID-19. Chris MacDonald, Strategic Business Director at SafeGroup, explains why Touchpoint Shield has given it the long-term solutions it was looking for.


The work being carried out by the scientists and engineers at the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) could not be more futuristic and, potentially, more important for our planet.


The UKAEA’s Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is a global leader in fusion energy research. If successful, it will harness the power of the stars to provide safe, sustainable, low-carbon energy.


Today’s nuclear power stations use fission, the splitting of atoms, to create energy. With fusion, however, energy is created by combined atoms. It’s what happens in the Sun, and creates far more energy. It’s also proving much, much

harder to do – but if the team at the CCFE cracks it, the benefits will be enormous.


Antimicrobial coating


Like all other organisations, the UKAEA is looking to make best use of new technologies to enhance protection against COVID-19. As a result, Touchpoint Shield has become a key element of its enhanced hygiene strategy.
