The importance of the supply chain

Matt Kuwertz, Sales and Marketing Director of Principle Cleaning Services, discusses the importance of having an effective supply chain and how the performance of its suppliers has a direct impact on the quality of its services.

Principle provides its services, which include cleaning, window cleaning, waste management, recycling and pest control, to some of London’s most iconic landmark buildings and the world’s leading brands. The company’s aim is to lead

the market, be the UK’s most sustainable cleaning company and the employer of choice in the industry.

By way of achieving these goals, suppliers and partners are chosen

with diligence. Price is not the determining factor despite the highly competitive nature of the London cleaning market. We are committed to partnership working with both suppliers and clients and are very much of the view that the right balance between price and quality is most clients’ preferred option. Having a great relationship with our supply partners is key to how that value is created.

When sourcing suppliers we take a number of factors into account to ensure our working partnerships are built on similar values and shared visions. We adopt a fair and inclusive procurement process and always look to partner with suppliers that meet our service, quality, cost, innovation and sustainability standards. This helps us deliver a cohesive solution for our clients, implement responsible sustainability practices, and create a clear view on providing a service that's second to none. These are essential to us as an organisation.

Principle’s privately-owned status goes hand in hand with our investment in the local community and is something that is highly desirable within our supply partners. Where possible, we work with businesses that employ people locally and have a minimal carbon footprint as a result of reduced travel or the use of electric vehicles.

38 | CONTRACT CLEANING

The relationship between our supply partners and our management team is another determining factor in the success achieved throughout our supply chain. While the decision to bring a partner on board is usually made centrally, the real test is how the day-to-day service is perceived by our managers who work with them on an ongoing basis.

Our management team have the opportunity to visually demonstrate their views on the supply chain and offer constructive feedback on how relationships and service provision can be continually improved. We hold regular innovation meetings with each suppliers’ allocated director- level ‘supplier champion’, which drives performance and ensures we are always at the forefront of what can be delivered, thus giving our clients the optimum solution at any stage of the contract.

Before becoming an established supplier, each company is fully vetted and audited. Only if they meet the criteria set out by our Health & Safety division do they become a preferred partner. Audits are carried out regularly using submitted risk assessments as a benchmark against the safety performance of the subcontractor. All supply partners must also adhere to all health and safety processes as a minimum. It’s equally as important to ensure the working relationship between both parties is a healthy one with performance audits carried out internally to assess the service level being received.

An effective supply chain has the ability to impact so many factors including customer service excellence and staff wellbeing – who are key to what makes a business what it is. Processes can be consolidated, costs controlled, and an improved end product created for the client. Ultimately, the promises made at the outset are achievable through creating value and selecting the right supply partners.
