Achieving efficiency and effectiveness

Paul Mulready, Marketing Manager of Northwood Hygiene Products, discusses ways to manage washroom hygiene in the backdrop of chronic labour shortages in the UK.

Many industries, including the cleaning and hygiene sector, claim that a lack of staff is disrupting their business. Since Brexit, the government has said that it only wants to admit skilled workers from overseas and has encouraged businesses to fill lower-skilled vacancies with workers who live here.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), 94,000 more EU nationals are estimated to have left the UK in 2020 than have arrived – an increase of nearly 40% compared to 2019. However, with offices and hospitality now opening up more, the work of cleaners is becoming more important than ever – and the sector is struggling to find staff.

This exodus of European workers is a challenging issue that comes at a crucial time in the UK’s fight against the pandemic, with rates of infection rising as Omicron sweeps through the population. With the World Health Organization (WHO) warning on 11 January that more than half of Europe’s population could be affected by the variant in the next two months, washrooms play an essential role in protecting our health and welfare.

So, how can organisations keep washrooms clean and maintained if they’re understaffed?

With less workers and potentially reduced cleaning hours available, it’s important to keep cleaning staff visiting time to a minimum by choosing dispensers that are both high capacity and quick and simple to refill.

Reducing washroom maintenance time is vital too – no one wants to be constantly fixing or replacing dispensers, so units must be made from hardwearing materials that can withstand use. Just as importantly, dispensers should also discourage wastage and misuse and be easy to clean, to reduce cleaning time as much as possible.

Efficient solution

The need for efficient washroom solutions has never been greater and Northwood Hygiene Products' comprehensive Raphael range is helping businesses to maintain even the most demanding washrooms efficiently, helping to save money and reduce waste.

60 | WASHROOM HYGIENE

With two toilet tissue and four hand towel dispensers, plus a soap dispenser, our range includes the TwinJumbo toilet roll dispenser, which holds up to 800m of roll to minimise the need for frequent replenishing.

Our long-lasting Infinity paper system helps to eliminate waste and deliver cost savings by only allowing one roll to be used at a time. The roll towel dispensers hold up to 250m each and provide approximately 500 dries, with some offering stub-roll transfer to ensure zero waste.

The Raphael folded towel dispenser has a 1000 sheet capacity and all Raphael hand drying systems dispense one at a time flat sheets to prevent overuse. The dispensers will not free roll to further reduce over usage and minimise any mess – and subsequent cleaning time – in the washroom.

Contact-free

Helping to save money as well as time, all of our dispensers are free of charge and have been thoughtfully designed to allow maintenance teams to immediately see whether or not they need topping up.

Our Raphael hand drying dispensers provide contactless dispensing, while the toilet tissue dispenser incorporates a Biokleen-treated handle to inhibit bacteria. Made from a single-piece shell, these dispensers are easy to wipe clean and all towels and rolls are fully enclosed for added hygiene.

Designed to reduce waste, whilst optimising washroom hygiene, the Raphael soap dispensers are easy to use and non-drip to help keep spaces clean. The soap cartridges come with a new nozzle to minimise bacteria harbouring, and Northwood also supplies Washboards to help to promote good hand hygiene.

By investing in well-designed systems like Raphael, we can enhance hand hygiene and make washrooms safe and pleasant for everyone.
