TALK TO JASON

This month, our resident flooring PR expert and columnist, Jason Kelly, discusses how recent changes to copyright law and how you can protect yourself.

THE SCREWFIX SEAL OF APPROVAL

Leading multi-channel trade supplier, Screwfix, is continuing to back innovation after listing more than 170 new products on its popular website.

The majority of new products came from 26 new suppliers which were selected during a recent ‘Innovation Day’ event, organised by Screwfix and the British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA). For many of the companies taking part in the online trial, this is the first time their products have been made available through a large supplier. And with

more than 270 stores across the UK, getting a Screwfix catalogue listing after the online trial could be a breakthrough for many products and companies.

Andrew Livingston, CEO at Screwfix, commented: “Our Innovation Day allowed us to cut the red-tape in setting up new suppliers and fast-track these exciting and innovative products into our range. Setting up relationships with new suppliers is key to the ongoing development of our brand and our offering, as we continue to look for ways to offer our customers the best possible choice.”

If you haven’t heard already, the coalition Government’s new Regulatory Reform Act contains changes to the copyright law, which allows exploitation of images where information identifying the owner is missing, is referred to as ‘orphan works’ by placing the work into ‘extended collective licensing’ schemes. In other words, if you are uploading product or corporate images on the Internet and they are not marked, then your images can effectively be used by your competitors as they see fit – liable laws notwithstanding.

So, if you don’t fancy helping your competitor’s gorilla marketing campaigns, now would be the time to copyright all your online images.

The process is very straightforward and I recommend carrying out two activities. The first

would be to place your logo or company name as a watermark over the image. The second would be to reference the image with your name, protecting the name and the original URL address. Of course, the new Law can also work to your advantage, because it also allows you to use an orphan work as a miscellaneous image which you have found on the internet – just make sure you undertake a simple ‘diligent search’ first!

So, aside from protecting yourself, the new law does allow you to remove a lot of the copyright worry out of using images as part of a well-structured social relations campaign. It’s especially useful when using images found on social platforms, such as Instagram, Pinterest or Flickr. A word of warning though, if you do use orphan works – it is good social etiquette to acknowledge its source.
