10 QUESTIONS WITH... ALEXIS BRADBURY

Each month, we ask a flooring industry professional the Tomorrow’s Flooring 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Alexis Bradbury from All About Underlay.

as an Apple fan, I love the focus on excellence and attention to detail he exuded. I’m not sure he was the nicest person to be around though, so there is always some compromise involved in being commercially mega successful. I think I’d rather be less successful but a more rounded person.

Q1

What was your first job?

My first job was working for a firm of chartered surveyors, valuing domestic and commercial properties, writing descriptions and placing the local adverts. It was fascinating and I learnt a lot about property.

Q2

How did you get into the industry?

My background is in marketing as an account handler with regional agencies, and being based in West Yorkshire, our client base naturally included lots of flooring companies. Those contacts led to the opportunity to launch our own e-commerce business, which focuses on products for the home.

Q3 00 56

Who, in any other industry, do you

most admire? I love to read about many different business people, their ethos and how they succeeded. I’ve just finished Steve Jobs’ biography and,

Q4

If money was no object, what car

would you buy? When I was younger some friends and I drove my old long wheelbase Land Rover to Kathmandu and unfortunately some corrupt customs officials seized it so we had to fly back. I’d love to go back and track it down and restore it to its former glory.

Q5

How would you improve the

flooring industry? Despite the fact that we run an e-commerce business, our aim is to sell our service and value proposition over and above pure price. As a newcomer to the industry, I think it is a shame that the internet has been regarded with suspicion and almost like an unwanted intruder. Change is inevitable, so I think more should be done to both guide businesses to trade effectively online, whilst creating a marketplace that makes

it sustainable to develop your business whatever the channel.

Q6

What did you want to be when

you were little? A professional sports person, but unfortunately I wasn’t quite good enough at any of my favourite sports to make a living out of them!

Q9

What do you think is the future of the

Q7 Q8

What do you do to unwind?

Sport is still a massive part of my life and running, cycling, walking and skiing are some of my favourite pastimes. I am also a keen photographer.

If you could have a dinner party with any

three people, dead or alive, with one person cooking and the other person providing the music, who would they be and why? I’d have Roy Orbison providing the music, because I love his work and he also had a very interesting life, and Paul Newman cooking because he was a great cook as well as a great actor, so I think we’d have a brilliant evening.

flooring industry? As with most industries, I believe that the future is multi-channel, allowing customers to decide how to access information, where to buy it from and when they want to shop for flooring. It’s all about building a relationship, whether that is conducted online, offline, or a combination. The customer who placed an order with us at 2.30am last night couldn’t do that through a “normal” store, and that obviously suited them, just as the many customers who pop in to look at our products or ring us up prefer to chat things through with a human.

Q10

If money was no object, what would

be your ideal holiday? I’d love to have the opportunity to spend a few months trekking in New Zealand, I’ve never been but it looks so untouched. I would love to climb some mountains and photograph to my heart’s content.
