A Message From The President
With AUSCLEAN 2013 ready to kick off in Sydney next week, Ron Segura, President of Segura & Associates, gives us his view as Head of the Judging Panel, at the Pulire Innovative Products and Services Awards.
I am a strong proponent of new technology and creativity in our industry. It reflects well on the cleaning sector, letting people know that it’s not composed of people who clean simply because they are not able to do anything else. It demonstrates that new technology developed in our industry affects the customers we serve in a positive way. After agreeing to participate as a speaker, I was asked if I would like to participate on the panel that would select the best innovative product in four categories.
This is the first time that I will be a participant. I have been very impressed with the organizers, particularly Melanie Robertson and Kim Taranto. Ausclean Pulire seems to have developed an educational program and a vendor show that meets the needs of the attendees and I can see it continuing to grow.
Presentations at shows in the United States are, of course, a bit easier because of the language. I can use examples that all are familiar with. In other countries that use a translator, you have to be careful that you use examples, words and phrases that can be translated with the correct meaning. I have had the opportunity to participate in shows in Mexico and Brazil and have enjoyed the experience.

In all my presentations, I try to make the information practical and applicable to their situation. I'm able to give them the customer perspective based on my years at Disney, but also I'm able to relate to the service provider as well. In Australia, as well as other locations, my presentations are customized for each area. They are not a PowerPoint and me reading what is on the slide, but interactive and fun.
When you look at the subjects and presenters, attendees will be able to take back to their organizations ideas that will assist in solving issues, growing, and maintaining a superior quality of service to their clients. Additionally, something that I think people can definitely expect from this year’s show is a platform to network with your peers in the industry which has been created so uniquely over the years.
In reviewing the submitted products, they reflect a lot of creativity and most importantly, a commitment to sustainability. I was very impressed with submittals from some of the smaller companies, and how they have developed products based on the needs of their customers. It's evidence, certainly, that they listen to what their customers are asking for. I'm very anxious to talk with those companies that submitted products, to find out their reasons for
developing them. Above all, I would like to see strong attendee support of the awards ceremony.
I am really looking forward to meeting my networking contacts in Australia in person. It will be nice to finally put a face to the name that you email on such a regular basis: a plight which I feel most of us in the industry can relate to. Additionally, I am looking forward to meeting as many new people as possible, sharing ideas and thoughts about the cleaning industry in Australia. And, of course, enjoying Australia!
There are a couple of particular companies that I think will do well, but I will keep that under wraps until after the awards! The important thing for me whenever I approach a new project or show in the industry, is to remember that we will have ‘arrived’ as an industry, when we ask our children what they want to be in when they grow up, and they say “I want to be in the cleaning business like you!” If they say that, then we do not feel like we have failed. I truly believe we have arrived, and hopefully AUSCLEAN 2013 will be another example of that.
