New Tricks

As many will know, our core objectives at Premiere Products are the manufacture/supply of high- quality cleaning chemicals, machines and janitorial goods. At nearly 90-years-old, we are rightly proud of our heritage in this fi eld. So too are we proud of the added value pieces that have been carefully constructed over the past 90 years to work in support of this core, and never is this truer than where the delivery of training and education is concerned.

The recently rebranded Premiere Cleaning Academy has been in existence in one shape or another for more than 40 years, which to my mind demonstrates a true commitment to our end users and a pioneering spirit which, in the early 70’s, was way ahead of its time. These qualities have continued to be instrumental in shaping our training course and qualifi cation offering over the years, and have certainly helped inform my ethos and beliefs about what’s best for our industry.

For example, whilst I'm a fi rm believer in training opportunities being available for people at all levels working in cleaning and FM, I feel that it is the largest percentage of staff, those working at the ‘coal face’, who deserve the most signifi cant training input. I would also suggest that whilst there is undoubtedly something to be said for workplace based qualifi cations, particularly for those more experienced and

expert staff, my preferred model for inexperienced or low skilled employees is to take them out of their daily routine, focus on best practice via discussion, presentation and demonstration, and ultimately assess their understanding and ability through semi-formal observation.

For this reason, the City & Guilds Award in Practical Cleaning Skills (7139) is an absolutely ideal fi t for the Premiere Cleaning Academy. Launched by City & Guilds last summer, the Award in Practical Cleaning is constructed to be delivered in exactly the way I have described above. Initially focusing on commonly carried out physical cleaning processes, the fi rst and second tranches of available skills included those listed below:

• Clean and maintain bathrooms • Clean and maintain washrooms

• Prepare, dry sweep and damp mop fl oor surfaces

• Prepare and clean furniture fi xtures and fi ttings

• Prepare and clean interior walls and windows

• Prepare and suction clean fl oor surfaces

• Prepare and clean stairs and landings

• Prepare and clean hard fl oor surfaces using machinery

• Prepare, spray clean and buff fl oor surfaces

• Clean and dispose of bodily fl uids, www.tomorrowscleaning.com

spillages and hazardous items • Prepare and clean refuse chutes

• Prepare, clean and service guestrooms and public areas

• Prepare and clean a food area and appliances

• Prepare, strip and apply emulsion fl oor polish

The plan with this qualifi cation has always been to keep adding skills until the industry is satisfi ed and the demand has been fulfi lled, thus another 10 skills have been added in the last month. Having been fortunate enough to be a member of the team responsible for developing them, it was with great anticipation that I awaited this date. The reason for this being that the qualifi cation as a greater whole now includes some really exciting skills on offer, which provide the opportunity for developing comprehensively trained cleaners who, once proven competent in the physical cleaning processes, can be allowed to progress onto more supervisory based skills which deal with auditing, induction training and green cleaning considerations to name a few. It’s certainly my experience that this is the fi rst time this type of qualifi cation has incorporated skills that allow for such developmental growth.
