from the editor
Right here, right now, you are either hold- ing in your hand, or viewing on screen, a product of our April theme, “Engaging Support Systems.” It is also likely that you (yes, you) are part of the support system
responsible for its creation!
Every issue of WSM is the result of a support network comprised of relation- ships, either directly or at least within six degrees of separation to the editorial staff (dream with me and just imagine it as a really big department of WSMA). Even if you haven’t written for this publica- tion, you may know one of our writers or have somehow influenced someone who has made an impression on them ultimately contributing to their articles. The WSM support network extending far and wide is made up of Wisconsin music educators, freelance designers, printers, advertisers, organizational partners, and all others who in some way have shaped its existence since 1932. Through WSMA school membership and WMEA profes- sional membership, you are able to tap into resources like WSM, as well as a wealth of programs and services available to you and your students. Our very own Wisconsin Foundation for School Music seeks and provides charitable support for these membership resources.
In the teaching world, the notion of stretched resources is an everyday “norm,” and in spite of the increasing pressure on music educators to teach more with less, those who develop, nurture and utilize networks of support, ultimately never go it alone! This issue dives into effective ways of engaging various support systems. From utilizing digital and social media to strengthening parent groups, seek- ing support through grants, fundraising, professional development, advocacy and more, we have your back on ways to keep students in the forefront while prioritizing the importance of music education in the eyes of the community and beyond.
