New Beginnings – New Opportunities: Part Two

Timothy J. Schaid, Executive Director

By the time this ar- ticle reaches you, most of you will be quite busy preparing students for WSMA State Solo & Ensem- ble Festivals, end of the year assess- ment performances (concerts) and ev-

erything else that needs to be taken care of prior to school dismissing for the summer recess! All of us at the state association offices wish you nothing but the best for you and your students as you close out the 2017-18 school year.

Shortly after assuming my duties as executive director of Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA), Wisconsin Music Educators Association (WMEA) and Wisconsin Foundation for School

Music (WFSM), I wrote an article titled, “New Beginnings – New Opportunities” for inclusion in Wisconsin School Musi- cian (WSM). That WSM article (2012) attempted to introduce myself to teachers at member schools and to share my “… vision of assuring … music education continues to move forward in Wisconsin schools.” (p. 10)

In December 2017 I announced to the WSMA, WMEA and WFSM boards that I would be retiring as of June 30, 2018. As I reflect on the work of the associations and foundation staff; the music educators, school administrators and professional in- dividuals who have served on the associa- tions and foundation boards, committees and as volunteers; I truly believe music education has moved forward in Wiscon- sin schools over the last six years.

The associations and foundation boards plan to have a new executive director in place by July 1, 2018. As such, this is my last article for publication in WSM as ex- ecutive director, which means there will be a new set of beginnings and opportunities for the associations and foundation. Thus, I write this article as part two of the article I wrote for WSM in September 2012. I take this opportunity to share with you the recent successes of the associations and foundation; successes that were achieved due to tireless and dedicated work of so many people. I also provide my perspec- tive on what new opportunities may lie ahead as we begin a new era with new leadership.

What follows, then, is a list of some of the successes of the associations and founda- tion from my perspective. By no means are these lists exhaustive. They simply try to give the reader a sense of the work that has been done over the last six years and lay foundation to opportunities for the future.

WSMA Successes WSMA Programs & Services

• Addition of contemporary a cappella to the list of available festival events

• Festival rule changes to reflect the ever-changing needs of students and teachers at member schools

• WSMA Accredited School oppor- tunity to help schools and districts promote the successes of their music students and music programs
