2018 Wisconsin State Music Conference

WMEA News WMEA Elections

WMEA is in the planning stages for the 2018 Wisconsin State Music Conference. The morning planning session took place on Saturday, January 6 at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education in Waunakee. Music educators from all over Wisconsin attended to discuss and prioritize session proposals for this year’s conference.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Music Education: Embracing Diversity.” This theme was generated in response to the movement NAfME is making with I.D.E.A. (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access). Diversity could mean a lot of things like socio-economics, ethnicity and gender, but also include what music educators teach in the classroom. Does the school district that you teach in offer any non-performance based classes?

The dates for this year’s conference are October 24-27 in Madison. Mark your calendars now and plan on attending. Please visit wmeamusic.org/conference to register, reserve a hotel room and for more information.

WMEA Awards

Before the school year comes to an end, please consider nominating a deserving person for the Community Service Award, Distinguished Administrator Award, Dis- tinguished School Board Member Award and Michael G. George Distinguished Service Award. In addition, the Melvin F. Pontius Creative Sparks in Music Educa- tion Award is given to music programs from around the state that have a creative, innovative or imaginative aspect to them. It could be in the classroom, an extension of the classroom, or a community outreach project or relationship. The award applica- tion needs a YouTube video upload, which is unlike the other awards. Self-nomina- tions are encouraged. The deadline is June 1 for all award applications. Please go to wmeamusic.org/awards more information and to nominate.

Wisconsin School Musician

The Southeast and North Central districts will be holding elections for a vice presi- dent to represent each area. All Southeast and North Central WMEA members will receive an electronic ballot for the vice president positions. An election for

president-elect is also happening and all members will receive an electronic ballot. Please vote when your electronic ballot arrives in your email.
