WMEA News Kati Seiter, WMEA President-Elect WMEA Advocacy Drive-In
On Wednesday, February 7, several music educators, administrators, business own- ers and parents participated in WMEA’s second Advocacy Drive-In that was organized by members of the Wisconsin Advocates for Music Education (WAME) committee. After a briefing and training at the Madison Concourse Hotel, participants walked to the Wisconsin State Capitol to meet with state senators and state repre- sentatives about including music and the arts on the annual School District Report Cards. The official Ask was:
Wisconsin Music Educators Association requests that the annual School District Report Cards be amended to include local and state enrollment percentages in music, visual arts and drama/theater as data on the Student Engagement Indicators page.
This data would be presented for informational purposes only and not considered in a district’s accountability calculations.
Legislators were eager to learn more about the School District Report Cards and the Ask. A total of 11 senators and 15 repre- sentatives were met with including 10 who are on the Education Committees.
WMEA Government Relations Chair Brad Schneider leads a training session for Advocacy Drive-In participants.
