CMP Summer Workshop: A Retreat for the Passionate Music Teacher Miriam Altman, WMEA State Chair, CMP

These days, profes- sional development conversations often occur in a digital, frenetic landscape. And that’s when we even have the time and energy to have them at all! The idea of a four-and-a-half

day summer professional development retreat is an anachronism in our modern, stretched-thin teaching world.

And yet, an intensive respite is a tre- mendous and well-deserved gift to give yourself! The CMP Summer Workshop is a time and place where caring, curi- ous music educators come together as a community. There is time for full con- versations, for philosophical wondering, and for cohorts to bond. There is space for dialogue, for laughter, and for deep dives into best practices and practical solutions.

Come be a part of the CMP community at UW-River Falls, June 25-29! Learn from master teachers, connect with colleagues and become reinvigorated. Check out comments from participants at the 2017 CMP Summer Workshop:

“I am realizing how much better I can become as a teacher. There is hope!”

“The best part of this workshop was having time to communicate with and bounce ideas off of well- respected teachers.”

“This workshop will completely change the way I teach. It has me very excited to dig deeper (with the kids!) into music than ever before.”

“I loved all the great and moving conversations we were able to have about our students and music education.”

“I remembered that teaching is so much about the process, not just the product. Being here with ev- eryone is what my heart and soul needs to reboot. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

“CMP is more about great teach- ing than any one strategy. It’s about picking great literature, doing your homework, being pas- sionate about what you do, staying true to the music, and being your- self, but at the same time not limit- ing yourself by fear of something that might not work.”

“In what ways will this workshop NOT impact my teaching? I am looking forward to helping my students create and understand connections that they had never noticed before.”

“CMP has deepened my desire to make sure I take care of my own professional development from a music education point of view.”

“I loved actually having time to work and consult with the awe- some CMP leaders that were here. They asked lots of questions to get me thinking about what I was doing. They challenged me to be a better teacher.”
