Titan Enterprises is spotlighting the critical customer testing phase in the development of its latest innovation: a low-cost ultrasonic beverage flowmeter tailored for OEM drinks dispensing systems.
Created in response to a specific OEM request, the new ultrasonic meter had to meet stringent design criteria: compact size, food-grade materials, low cost, hygienic operation with no internal moving parts, and seamless integration into existing setups.
“This project isn’t just about building a flowmeter - it’s about solving an industry problem,” said Neil Hannay, Senior Development Engineer at Titan Enterprises. Drawing on their success with turbine flowmeters, Titan explored ultrasonic technology as a more robust solution for beverage applications, resulting in a new meter within the Atrato® flowmeter family.
Titan’s R&D strategy places strong emphasis on real-world feedback. “In the lab, we work from first principles, but we can’t replicate a customer’s operating environment,” Neil explains. “Customer testing is essential to creating a product that performs reliably in the field and delivers features that truly matter to the user.”
After internal validation, prototype meters are supplied for field trials, allowing OEM partners to assess performance under real operational stresses. This testing phase is key to refining elements such as fluid compatibility, mechanical durability, and fault tolerance. It also builds customer confidence and clarifies expectations around performance and cost.
Feedback from field use informs iterative design improvements and ensures the final product meets both technical and commercial requirements. “The loop between our engineering team and the customer’s application is vital,” adds Neil. “We’re not just aiming for functionality - we’re aiming for perfect fit.”

Enhanced PU tubing for peristaltic pumps
Environmental sample extraction: Overcome limitations of EPA method 3546
Many laboratories using EPA method 3546 for the solvent extraction of environmental samples are aware of the bottleneck of sample throughput plus sample weight limitations.
Traditional extraction of contaminants such as PCBs, semivolatile organic compounds, and PAHs use lengthy methods that also require large volumes of solvents. A recent development - microwave assisted extraction (MAE) overcomes these limitations, resulting in rapid sample preparation with reduced amounts of solvents while working at higher temperatures and pressures.
The Milestone Ethos X microwave extraction system from Analytix can extract organic target compounds from soils in full compliance with EPA 3546 (100-115°C and 50-150 psi). The system is capable of processing up to 24 samples and 30 g of sample per vessel simultaneously thereby improving the limit of quantitation (LOQ) for analysis. This results in the capacity to extract over 200 samples in an 8-hour workday and the potential problems of contamination, memory effects, and cleaning are eliminated due to the use of disposable glass vials.
Spetec GmbH has enhanced its PU-Longlife solvent-resistant tubing, part of its product portfolio for peristaltic pumps. The updated material is now significantly more supple, allowing operation at much lower compression levels. This reduces wear on both the pump and, in particular, the pump heads. Made from a highly durable thermoplastic polyether polyurethane (PU), the tubing offers excellent resistance to hydrolysis and an extended service life.
When used in peristaltic pumps, the tubing achieves an expected service life of 500 continuous operating hours (tested with distilled water at 33 RPM). Actual performance may vary depending on the solvent, tubing diameter, compression, and other influencing factors.
PU-Longlife tubing is particularly suitable for solvents such as alcohols, benzene, diesel, and kerosene. These improvements open up a broader range of applications compared to the previous version of the tubing.

The handling is very easy, the sample is weighed directly into the vial, hexane/acetone or dichloromethane/acetone (1:1) is added, and the vessel is loaded into the 24 place FastEX that has contactless temperature control in all positions. After 10–20 min of microwave heating, the sample is ready to be filtered and analysed by GC or GCMS.
The use of disposable glass vials coupled with speed of extraction and reduced solvent consumption makes the Ethos X a unique and innovative solution for the extraction of contaminants from soils, providing unmatched ease of use and low running costs.

The tubing is sensitive to moisture and light and should always be stored in its original packaging in a cool, dry place, protected from light.
A solvent resistance table is available on request, and tubing samples can be provided for testing with specific media.
