Laboratory Products 27 Cleanroom air for compact spaces
The requirements in respect of the cleanliness of environments have increased dramatically, particularly in the areas of industrial production, such as optics, packaging and in laboratories and research. A particulate-free, sterile environment is often crucial in such fi elds. For this reason, considerable amounts of money are often spent and enormous technical effort is invested in erecting large clean rooms, even though clean room conditions are only actually needed in part of the space.
It is for exactly applications such as these that Spetec® clean room conditions precisely where they are needed. A single Spetec®
offers its Laminar Flow Box FBS series of products which make it possible to create Flow Box FBS delivers an effective clean room area of between
0.37 and 1.12 m². Although this may not sound like much, it is often more than enough because the type H14 fi lter used in the Flow Box FBS removes at least 99.995% of all particles – based on a particle size of 0.12 μm in accordance with MPPS.
The Spetec® Flow Box FBS therefore improves the air quality by at least a factor of 10,000 compared to the ambient air. As a result, clean
rooms corresponding to ISO class 5 are achieved at a very acceptable cost and without the need for any building work. The Spetec®
The Flow Box is available as both a fl oor-standing and table variant. More information online:

Flow Box FBS is available in a number of different models and has been tested and certifi ed by the Fraunhofer Institute for
Manufacturing Engineering and Automation. It goes without saying that only materials suitable for clean room applications - such as acrylic glass and anodised aluminium – are used.

Dual-access balance enclosure
Hemco’s SSE Balance Enclosure is engineered for safe, effi cient operation in educational or light-duty lab settings. Designed for island or peninsula placement, the enclosure offers dual-side access - ideal for student workstations or small-scale procedures involving analytical balances.
Available in 24”, 36”, and 48” widths, the SSE accommodates a range of instruments and processes. Its robust construction features a chemical- resistant metal frame and ¼” clear acrylic sides and sash for excellent visibility.
A carefully engineered airfl ow system with integrated airfoil and bypass channels ensures contaminants are directed to a baffl ed exhaust, enhancing containment and protecting users. The ergonomic sash is angled at 15° for comfortable viewing, with an 8” reach-in height and full swing-up functionality, expanding the access opening to 20” when needed.
Additional features include two utility service ports located on the lower rear wall - one on each side - for fl exible integration with lab services. More Information online:

ADVERTORIAL Reducing the risk of strain: Ergonomic pipetting practices and solutions
Prolonged pipetting can lead to repetitive strain injuries (RSIs), with nearly 90% of researchers using pipettes for more than an hour daily reporting hand and arm issues. Discomfort can also extend to the wrist, shoulders, neck and back.
Three key risk factors contribute most to pipetting-related RSIs: posture, exertion, and repetition.
Posture: Maintaining a neutral posture is essential. Keep your back straight, shoulders relaxed, and feet fl at on the fl oor or supported by a footrest. Try to keep your arms close to your torso and arrange frequently used labware and reagents within easy reach to minimise stretching.
Exertion: Pipetting requires a surprising amount of effort – lifting the instrument, aspirating and dispensing, and attaching or ejecting tips. Choosing pipettes with features such as a fi nger hook, low plunger resistance, reduced stroke travel, and light tip ejection can signifi cantly lower this burden.
Repetition: Repeated motions over extended periods can increase injury risk. You can reduce repetition by using electronic models or switching to multichannel or adjustable spacing pipettes to streamline workfl ows and limit repetitive tasks.
The article also highlights how Integra Biosciences’ ergonomically engineered manual and automated pipetting tools are designed to ease physical strain, supporting comfort and effi ciency across a range of applications.
